Sometimes nostalgia hits me hard.
When Yugioh first came out I adored the show and it’s various tie-ins. Yes, I know the show was cheesy. Yes, the concept was a bit wack—people in that world take a child’s card game way too seriously. Nonetheless, I loved it. I even bought some of the game boy advance games and started collecting the cards to build my own deck. Sure, my deck wouldn’t win a duel with a pro guy, but it was serviceable. I remember my first ever Yugioh card; I found it in the parking lot of a local high school. The card was Castle Wall and it was bent, had a few small tears, and a large crease down the middle like it had been folded in half, but I decided to keep it all the same. It was the first card in my collection and it still remains my favorite. Sixteen years ago when Yugioh Gx came out, I stopped collecting the cards but I still watched the show sporadically. Then there was that whole fiasco with 4Kids not dubbing the last season, instead skipping to Yugioh 5D’s. I was disappointed, but I switched and watched the first two or three episodes and I didn’t really like them so that was the end of my Yugioh fandom…until yesterday.
Every time I check out of stores like Toys R US, Wal-Mart, or Target I pass the collectable section which includes the Yugioh cards. I’m always tempted to buy a pack, but I always would refrain because after Yugioh Gx I stopped following the TV series and I don’t know any of the cards so it wouldn’t be any fun. Of course yesterday when I was at Target I saw these cards for the original TV series I just had to get them so I did. What I really enjoy about these is opening the packs not really the cards themselves.
For $3.99, I got two millennium packs of card. According to the package, the entire Millennium Set includes 48 different cards:
- 28 Commons
- 10 Rare Cards
- 6 Super Rare Cards
- 4 Ultra Rare Cards
The summary on the back of the package read:
Millennium Pack is full of iconic cards played in the original Yu-Gi-Oh! animated series. Not only does it have popular cards played by Yugi, Kaiba, and Joey but it also has brand-new cards that were played by Marik in the Top 8 of the Battle City Tournament including the final form of the Egyptian God Card Ra “The Winged Dragon of Ra – Immortal Phoenix.”
When I opened the two packages this is what I got:
Pack 1:
- Widespread Ruin-->Rare
- Exodius the Ultimate Forbidden Lord-->Common
- Sky Galloping Gaia the Dragon Champion-->Super Rare
- Black Illusion Ritual-->Common
- Dark Master – Zorc (yes!) -->Common
Pack 2:
- Contract with the Dark Master-->Common
- La Jinn the Mystical Genie of the Lamp-->Common
- Dark Paladin-->Common
- Gandora the Dragon of Destruction-->Common
- Panther Warrior-->Rare

I love Zorc! Mostly because of the beloved kids TV show Zorc and Pals (see Little Kuriboh’s Yugioh Abridged). Also, it’s a good thing I got Zorc in my first pack and Contract with the Dark Master in my second pack. If I ever decide to build my own deck and duel again I now can resurrect Zorc and destroy the world!

I was pleasantly surprised that out of the 10 cards I was actually at least vaguely aware of all of the cards. Of course, they weren’t the iconic cards I was thinking about when I bought the packs. When I bought the packs I thought the cards would be more of the iconic ones like Dark Magician Girl, Mystical Elf, Time Wizard, or Blue Eyes White Dragon. After I bought the package and opened it, I realized that the cards that I just mentioned are probably considered relatively rare (I don’t really know the intricacies of card collecting) and so it makes sense that I didn’t get those cards. I realized that those cards are probably not even in the collection. Kind of a bummer.
